Description: Scarce Civil War Confederate Dug/Excavated Enfield Musket Nipple Protector, HANDMADE FROM CSA Minie Ball, Dug in Fredericksburg Battle AreaDESCRIPTION: Very unusual original dug/excavated musket nipple protector. Hand made, apparently from a .577 Enfield CSA minie ball bullet. Particularly nice one with multiple large hammer hits/impressions. Definately made by a Confederate soldier as Confederate troops used the vast majority of Enfield muskets, Enfield minies, and Gardner minies, and they were the only ones to use.69 caliber ammunition and "buck and ball" cartridges. Very nice as it is clearly hand made to replace the brass nipple protector on a chain that came originally with the Enfield muskets imported by the Confederacy. And it was clearly used!!! Very often the small musket chains on the muskets broke and the brass protector was lost and had to be replaced. You can see the great hammer imprint in this one and the nipple imprint on the other side. And of course, the shape clearly shows that it was probably made out of an Enfield bullet. Found in a camp area near the battlefield of Fredericksburg, Va.. Found on private land with owner's permission. Nipple protectors were used to reduce the pressure between hammer and nipple, and eliminate damage to the nipple from repeated hammer hits. Very unusual item and would make a great addition to ANY CAMP, MUSKET, OR BULLET COLLECTION OR DISPLAY. Has a nice dug lead patina and is in excellent excavated condition. Nice, unusual camp/battlefield pick up/dug piece. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS!!!Please see my auction list for other interesting items!! SHIPPING TERMS:Buyer pays $6.00 shipping in the US.
