Description: Original circa 1898 framed albumen photo of Chief Sentele (AKA Chief Grant Richards) of the Tonkawa tribe, and his wife. Sentele was also a former government scout. This was photographed by Frank A. Rinehart for the Indian Congress in 1898. This is an original 1898 albumen, not a reprint or modern copy. The full size of the albumen is about 8" x 10" with 7.5" x 5.75" viewable. The original image is affixed to a newer board and very nicely framed and double-matted behind glass. The frame is approximately 17" x 15".The image has some wear, as shown, and some light wrinkling, damages and losses. Most of the damage is not visible - it is around the edges of the image and hidden beneath the mat. As it is now, it displays very nicely in this frame and is ready to hang. From Wikipedia: The Indian Congress occurred from August 4 to October 31, 1898 in Omaha, Nebraska, in conjunction with the Trans-Mississippi International Exposition. Occurring within a ecade of the end of the Indian Wars, the Indian Congress was the largest gathering of American Indian tribes of its kind to that date.[1] Over 500 members of 35 different tribes attended, including the Apache chief Geronimo, who was being held at Fort Sill as a United States prisoner of war. Frank A. Rinehart's photographs of the Indian Congress participants are regarded as one of the best photographic documentations of American Indian leaders at the turn of the century.
