Description: Rare satirical caricature of Henrik Ibsen. Signed and dated 1900. Dimensions: 6 ½ x 4 for drawing alone. 8 x 10 inches inclusive frame. Description: Ink and pencil on paper. (Paper is possibly from a sketchbook). Mounted on red cardboard. Signed and dated in pencil to the lower right: Henrik Ibsen. Januar. 1900. The work is inscribed in Norwegian with verses from the Ibsen poem: Bergmanden. The Miner. (First published in 1871) « Bergvegg, brist med drønn og brag for mitt tunge hammerslag! Engang satt som gutt jeg glad under himlens stjernerad. Glemte liens sus og sange i min grubes tempelgange» Fine satirical caricature depiction of the Norwegian playwright and dramatist, Henrik Ibsen (1828 -1906) an influential Norwegian playwright renowned for works of moral analysis staged as harsh representations of middle-class life. Ibsen wrote without regard for a public that he considered petty and pretentious, scandalizing the audiences of A Doll’s House and subsequent plays with his refusal to conform to any traditional happy endings. These disturbing works scrutinized ordinary people who were forced to recognize their true selves—for better or worse—once stripped of the societal masquerade. We are uncertain whom the artist behind the drawing is. And whether the pencil signature is by Henrik Ibsen himself. The depiction seems to be based on Felix Vallottons woodcut homage to Henrik Ibsen. Printed in Zurich 1894. A woodcut that Felix Vallotton made after a portrait by Norwegian photographer Daniel Georg Nyblin (1826–1910) The drawing could be a work by a follower of Félix Vallotton, an unknown, or one of the many artists whom also portrayed Ibsen while he was still living. ( Christian Krohg, Edvard Munch and others) A very interesting ink drawing and worth of further research. The drawing will be shipped with its frame and glass.
