Description: Rare c1900 Antique Southwest Indian Silver Salt Cellars & SpoonsPresented is a fabulous old set of 2 southwest Indian salt cellars and matching spoons. The salt cellars each have an open oval shaped bowl with 4 feet. The matching spoons have a neat design. After you scoop the salt from the cellar, the top of the bowl of the spoon has three holes for sprinkling the salt onto your food. Both the cellars and the spoons have great punch work with traditional, probably Navajo designs. The salt spoons are identical, but the decoration on the saltcellars is different although their form and size is exactly the same. The salt cellars are probably Navajo, definitely Indian from the USA. I believe these pieces were made between 1880 and 1920. Salt cellars were most commonly used through the 1800s, by the 1920s they were certainly losing favor and popularity. These pieces were undoubtedly made to be sold as souvenirs on one of the reservations. I have never seen American Indian salt cellars. Certainly these pieces must be quite unusual if not rare. The salt cellars are both marked underneath with the initials MOA, possibly for the maker. This set is in fantastic condition. One of the spoons has a small bend in the handle that could easily be straightened. This is irrelevant. The inside of the salt cellars show some signs of minor surface wear, but no pitting. There are no dents, no repairs, and no problems. It is very rare to find the entire set together and in such remarkable condition. The salt cellars measure 1 inch by 1 inch or 30 by 37 mm. The are 7/8 inch or 21 mm tall. The spoons are 2 5/16 inches or 59 mm long. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
