Description: Designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, the iconic Buffalo nickel or Indian Head nickel is a copper-nickel five-cent piece struck by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938. While many of these nickels have had their dates worn away in circulation, the date 1927 is still clearly visible on this coin. Despite attempts by the Mint to adjust the design, the coins proved to strike indistinctly, and to be subject to wear—the dates were easily worn away in circulation.
