Description: From my collection: Here we have a RARE Antique L. & I. J. WHITE, BUFFALO, NY, No. 38 Solid BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD Screw Arm Plow Plane with 5 Irons. The firm of L. & I. J. White was established in 1837, and later incorporated in 1892 by two brothers, Leonard and Ichabod Jewett White. This famous company offered tools to the trades. Ship builders, coopers and timber framers in particular preferred this brand, one of the few edge tool companies to survive as a family owned affair. In production from 1837 through 1928, the company produced a full line of chisels, planes, draw knives and many of the tools specific to a skilled trade. The maker mark and '38' is on the toe. This plane is 'Rare' since it is made of SOLID 'Brazilian Rosewood' (the darkest version of Rosewoods). This plane is in Very good 'used tool' condition with minor wear from use. One screw arm has some thread chips (see pics). The only cracks I see in the entire plane are in one of the large bulbous nuts and one of the flat-style nuts. The nuts move very well on the arms. No 'mallet bruising' on the wedge or the body. There is a very nice working brass and steel depth stop. It has a brass locking feature. The Brass and Steel skate is in very good condition with some very minor corrosion marks. The plane comes equipped with 5 cutting irons made by HUMPHREYSVILLE MFG. CO.(Humphreysville Manufacturing was an important manufacturer of augers and bits, plane irons, and chisels. This company was in business in Seymour, Connecticut from 1852 to 1904. Seymour was apparently called Humphreysville until 1850. Yet another source says that the Humphreysville Manufacturing Company dates back to 1810, when it made woolen and cotton goods and paper. Col Humphreys, for whom the town derived its earlier name, was an aide to General Washington during the American Revolution). The irons are all maker marked and you get the following sizes:1/4", 5/16", 1/2", 9/16" and 5/8"). The irons are clean and sharp. The plane body is approx. 10-1/2" L (includes tote). The fence is approx. 9-3/8" L. The screw arms are approx. 10-3/4" long. One owner mark on toe. This would make a wonderful addition to your plow plane collection !! Pease review pics to confirm condition !! ** Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
