Wellman Barnard was born in Cornish, N. H., Sept. 10, 1852, the son of Levi N. and Eliza (Wellman) Barnard. He attended Kimball Union academy and Dartmouth college. After leaving college he became a correspondent of a New York paper and later a special. correspondent of the Boston Daily News and a member of the educational party to Europe and the World's Universal Exposition at Vienna in 1873. This was followed by a period with several Boston and New York papers and he covered the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 for a string of metropolitan dailles. From 1878 to 1883, he was Vermont manager for the Boston Evening Star; from 1885 to 1890, special correspond- ent and manager in Vermont for the New York Evening Graphic and con- tributed articles to many other nationally known journals un farming and on the results of his travels that took him to many foreign lands. He was present in Paris following the siege and its capture in the war with Germany in 1870 and his description of the, condition of the city after the siege was extensively quoted, both here and abroad. After reaching middle age, he married Mrs. Clara Westlake, a native of Massachusetts, but the romance was short lived, his bride deserting him after three years and obtaining a divorce,More than four years ago Mr. Bar- nard was stricken with a shock and since that time has been an inmate of Springfield hospital. "He was named Isaac Welman when born, but name was changed afterwards by act of legislature of 1878. It is said that he was an active special correspondent for several papers both in Boston and New York. A member of the educational party to Europe at the World's Universal Exposition at Vienna in 1873. He was stationed at Philadelphia Centennial exposition in 1876.
