Description: Offered is an exquisite and rare antique Haviland hard paste porcelain compote on a three footed base. The compote has a hand painted aesthetic French Japonisme style floral decoration with striking colors of cinnabar, deep salmon, and gold against a pure white background. The center floral design of chrysanthemums and a peony is surrounded by fine concentric rings in cinnabar and gold (some of the photos make the gold gilding look dark--actually, the gold is very rich in color). The outer ring of the center of the compote and the outside has four floral garlands interspersed with single flowers. The footed base has two floral garlands interspersed with flowers. The compote's surround is reticulated with arches outlined with fine cinnabar lines. The top scalloped edge is a pale salmon. Each of the three feet is decorated with a fine coquille/shell with cinnabar accents. To call attention to the fine details on this piece, behind each shell are fine lines which creates a dimensional background for the shell. The compote is a nice size measuring 8" in height and 8 7/8" in diameter. The piece was made in two pieces and is connected with its original iron bolt. The base is marked with the underlined "H&Co" and also "HAVILAND & Co. DAVIS COLLAMORE & Co. BROADWAY& 21ST NEW YORK" (Davis Collamore & Co. was a prominent New York City importer of porcelain and glass in the late 19th century which was a rival to high-end NYC retailers such as Tiffany & Co. and Black, Starr & Frost). The compote is in very good estate condition and will display beautifully. There are no cracks, chips, hairlines or repairs. There is minimal rubbing of the painted decoration and the colors are clean and bright. There are a few scattered very tiny spots where the gold gilding is worn on a few of the flowers, but this is very hard to discern. A rare and beautiful find in very nice condition.
