Description: VERY RARE 1944 Josten 10K Yellow Gold Kahler Hospitals Rochester MN Nursing School pin brooch *6 G. Previous owner's initials on the back along with Josten 10K. Amazing and rare estate find- own a piece of The Mayo Clinic History! This is from a large local Minnesota estate where the owner was a nurse at the Mayo Clinic Methodist Hospital at the end of her career but was trained at the then Kahler Hospitals School of Nursing during the last 2 years of World War ll. In 1918 Dr. Melvin S. Henderson of the Mayo Clinic, chief of staff of Colonial Hospital, and Miss Mary J. Gill, nurse and superintendent of nurses at Colonial, recommended the establishment of a training school. The recommendation was accepted, and the Kahler Corporation established the Colonial Hospital Training School of Nurses with admission of the first five students on April 9, 1918. One to seven students were admitted in succeeding months until there were a total of 35.The Kahler pin was designed by Lyla M. Olson and presented with diplomas at graduation. It is composed of a cross, caduceus and Florence Nightingale lamp. The symbol of the cross has been used for hundreds of years, but it's not known when it was first used. The cross of the Kahler pin is a combination of the Pattee and Maltese crosses.The original pin was designed by Lyla M.
