Description: This rare 1933 photo depicts L.A. Pace as the Jack Borton All-Navy Heavyweight Champion aboard the USS Trenton (CL-11), the ship he served on. Approximate size: 2.8 inches x 4.2 inches I also have another listing of the same L.A. Pace meeting with Captain Nelson Goss and Admiral Kinner. Feel free to check out my store to look up that listing too. All-Navy Sports allows Sailors who possess the athletic skills to compete above the intramural level, in team or individual sports, a chance to represent the Navy at higher-level athletic competitions. The Jack Borton trophy is one of the trophies given out as an award for being a champion. At, the present time seven sports - basketball, volleyball, boxing, bowling, tennis, golf and softball - are included in All-Navy competition. Each is played according to recognized amateur rules. In addition to these, opportunities are present in numerous other programs. Navy sports have come a long way from the days when sailors received their sports competition by clambering up and down the rigging of a ship. USS Trenton (CL-11) was an Omaha-class light cruiser, launched in 1923, originally classified as a scout cruiser, of the United States Navy. She was the second Navy ship named for the city of Trenton, New Jersey. She spent most of her pre-war career moving between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Trenton joined the Special Service Squadron in 1934, for a good-will tour of Latin America. In May 1939, she would join Squadron 40-T in protecting American interests during the Spanish Civil War and not return to the US until July 1940, when she carried the royal family of Luxembourg, fleeing from the Nazi occupation of their country. Please inspect the pictures, as they give the best representation of condition. May have discoloring, edge or corner wear, marks, creases, fading, smudges, corner or edge bends, tears, or corners missing. (B73 inventory number)
