Description: Offered here is an original Italian ballet libretto: Giovanni Briol's ASSASVERO: AZIONE COREOGRAFICA DIVISA IN UN PROLOGO E TRE ATTI da rappresentarsi sulle scene dell'I.R. Teatro alla Scala. La Quaresima 1856. Mlano: Tip. di Paolo Ripamonti Carpano, 1856. 16 pp. Music by Antonio Mussi.Giovanni Briol choreographed in Italy in the mid-19th-century, including at the celebrated LA SCALA in Milan. Included in the case of ASSASVERO was the famous mime EFFISIO CATTE in the lead role of Assasvero. The setting is in the Middle Ages (1190 AD), and the ballet opens on the day of the KERMESSE, a popular festiva in Anversa in the Brabante. Other famous dancers who performed included ADELAIDE MERANTE, CATERINA BARETTA, and FRANCESCO MERANTE. La Scala "Scuola di Ballo" was directed at the time by AUGUSTO HUS.The second scene is set in BULGARIA. Later scenes are set in THESSALONIA and CONSTANTINOPLE. allowing for the scenes to display "coleur locale," which was highly prized through the period of the Romantic Ballet. Crucial to the study of dance and ballet history is the ballet libretto, which includes the names of the choreographer, music composer, ballerinas and male dancers, description of scenes, and a summary of the plot. These libretti were often used and discarded and with the passage of time have become rarer and harder to find. In Europe they sell for as much as 120 Euros. For the importance of ballet libretti to the history of dance and music, see IL LIBRETTO DI BALLO: RIFLESSIONI STORICHE E TEORICHE IN OMAGGIO AD ALBERTO TESTA, a cura di Patrizia Veroli (Massimiliano Piretti Editore, 2017).
