RARE 1820 s Dark Blue Scriptural Series ~ Horsemen of the Apocalypse ~

Description: Seller: Alley-Antiques DESCRIPTION:Staffordshire Transferware. Fabulous rare plate from the "Scriptural Series"; by Enoch Wood & Sons. This is a hard to find series made in England for the American market. This view, The Horsemen of the Apocalypse, is a rare and hard to find view in this series. Marked on back with an impressed WOOD. This dates to the 1820s. Circa 1825. Vivid dark blue color. This is a very hard to find series. Marked with the impressed Wood. The plate is "The Horsemen of the Apocalypse" or Revelation from the Scriptural series. The central scene is of 2 of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse ( War and Conquest I believe). In the vignettes on the rim have a cross and a book. The plate depicts 2 charging horsemen, one shooting an arrow, one wielding a sword, riding through the clouds. Beautiful very rare pattern. Antique. Almost 200 years old. Good condition for age. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Outer and inner rim wear. Wear and utensil marks to face. Some toning and wear to back. Typical in-the-making imperfection like stilt marks, sand grit loss in the glaze may be noticed. Beautiful very hard to find example. Measures about 9 1/4";. Rare view from a very scarce series.
