James Morgan Pryse (1859-1942) was an American theosophist and book publisher, the American publisher of the important works of Helena Blavatsky, the founder of the movement. In the foreword to his theosophically motivated work, the author clarifies that his work - not being a Christian himself - does not serve theological purposes, but instead he attempts to cleanse the original text of the influence of the Judaism of the Old Testament, and of those Greek mythical hymns, which, in his view, the authors worked into in a corrupted prose form into an original, uncorrupted version, which uncorrupted original was lost due to the manipulations of the early church.
