Description: Item Description "YOU EITHER GO BACKWARDS OR FORWARD. YOU CAN'T STAND STILL." Rowdy sergeant Jefferson Harder (John Payne) has a bad habit of misconduct that has held him back in his military career, but he's given a chance to advance if he can figure out what is going on in Laramie, Wyoming which is preventing the railroad from finishing it's line connecting the East and West. Upon arrival, Payne quickly finds out the worst kept secret in town - that his old buddy and current saloon owner, Jim Shanessy (Dan Duryea), is behind the chicanery. Nobody is ever able to prove Shanessy and his henchmen (Myron Healey and Lee Van Cleef) are involved. The town leaders, while happy about support from the Army, are disappointed from the start that they have only sent one man to do the job and grow increasingly critical of the heavy-handed tactics employed by Payne to clean up the town. Between thumping the villains' skulls and getting the railroad back on track, Payne barely has time to strike up a romantic relationship with dance hall owner and partner of Jim Shanessy, Lou Carter (Mari Blanchard). Very little melodrama to be found in this one as Payne spends most of his time pounding the town's scoflaws. Jesse Hibbs directed several similar westerns to Rails Into Laramie which were all exceptional quality B Technicolor productions. There are some excellent scenes on a train at the end of the film during the final showdown between Payne and the baddies. John Payne was one of the best leading actors of the post World War II era that few people remember today. He was such a versatile actor, and looked equally at home whether in the saddle, a crime drama or a comedy. Here he carries the day and, as always, he turns in a solid performance. Dan Duryea does well as the duplicitous villain. Mari Blanchard is not as good here as she was in "Destry" made in the same year, but she's good eye-candy and works as Payne's love interest. The intelligent screenplay by D.D. Beauchamp and Joseph Hoffman utilizes the fact that Wyoming was organized as a territory at the same time as the transcontinental railroad was coming through, and women were given the right to vote and serve on juries. These developments factor into the plot in situations where the newly-liberated women prove themselves braver than the men in town. A good Western that also features: Barton McLaine, Ralph Dumke, James Griffith, Joyce Mackenzie and Lee Van Cleef.
