Description: RAF Escaping Series 3 Weerzien in De Biesbosch cover Cover depicts map of the Netherlands and bears 25c 400th Anniversary of the Netherlands flag stamp . Cover has been flown from Gilzen Rijen to RAF Northolt on a DH Devon of 21 Squadorn During the whole period that the Netherlands were occupied, wide spread assistance was offered to British and Allied aircrews that were shot diwb there or who evaded into the area, Because of the difficulties of making a sea crossing to England most escapers were held hidden by the Dutch Resistance and then passed along escape routes across he Netherlands to Belgium, France or Luxembourg. The Biesbosch a fresh water delta of waterways creeks and islands was a natural hiding place for escapers and when allied lines reached the Maas river it became a final area to be crossed to freedom, a task made difficult by the high concentration of German troops rhere. The Dutch resistance in the Biesbosch was highly organised and in addition to the general harrassement of the Wehrmacht it operated escape routes which carried Allied aircrew and soldiers across the lines and oassed special agents and intelligence to and from the Dutch hinterland. Many escapers joined this section of the Dutch resistance whilst waiting to pass along the escape route and were thus involved in active operations against German troops We usually have lots of other items up for sale so why not have a look
