I have always loved graphic arts and at one time had l twin size quilt hanging on my wall. Maybe it's time to do this again.... CONDITION: black magic marker mark on edge per picture, otherwise like new, unread OHIO QUILT STORY: ha..optional read Question: were these purchased from kits..tell me please! My mom was a determined person.... she discovered about 8 quilt tops that my great grandmother hand pieced together. My guess would have been the creation period to be at the turn of the century. All quilts were in the flower garden pattern and each had a strong primary color surround. Dark purple, grass green, azul blue amongst others all in other colors I liked. She took it upon herself to learn to hand quilt each quiltop. Mom acquired a quilt frame and later a large hoop to finish each and every one. The borders were all color accented bias tape, hand stitched of course! We had a large beamed family room and mom would sit on the floor with the full size quilt frame stitching day after day. Mind you, she never used big hasty stitches but her goal was around 12 stitches per inch. Those quilt tops filled the room and gradually rolled up as she advanced. The large frames were stood up and leaned against the wall when she was done for the day. My graphic mind started creating abstract patterns that mom could cut out, patch together and eventually quilt. Well I would have been good at the shopping part and pattern part. Dear mom did not fall for the work plan i created for her. She did humor me once and quilted an antique piece that I drew the stitch pattern on. I never knew how long it took mom to complete the quilts but she did it in grand style! Never did her 3 daughter's tell her she did a wonderful job! Things we need to learn.....wonderful pieces mom! PS: i love the Amish quilts and remember visiting a pristine Amish farm. Quilts were stacked 3 foot high on the bed. This was along time ago when I went to quilt shows all the time...Amish quilts were running about $1000-$2000 at the time. Antique dealers were buying as quick as they could. I later learned that some Amish men told the ladies that they could not create a beautiful art piece just for pleasure. The woman folk showed them and said each quilt was made out of leftover fabrics ( which could not be wasted) and the alleged quilting stitches were necessary to hold the utilitarian blankets pieces together. I believe each quilt had some type of "error" built in so the quilts would not be perfect.....only God was perfect. The Amish men were satisfied and the lucky women got to use their creativity, keep the family warm and have productive " parties". Buy the magazine and enjoy!
