Description: QUEEN VICTORIA. Victoria (born 1819) was the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death in 1901. Her more than 63 years on the throne remains unmatched in the history of Great Britain and ranks her among the longest-reigning monarchs of any nation in modern times. IMPORTANT MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED BY QUEEN VICTORIA TO HER BROTHER, THE KING OF SWEDEN AND NORWAY, WITH THE CLOSING SENTIMENTS IN HER HAND Important manuscript letter signed by Queen, “Victoria R,” to her, “Good Brother, The King of Sweden and Norway,” announcing the recall of their British ambassador: “Sir My Brother, Having occasion elsewhere for the Services of Sir Arthur Charles Magenis, Knight Commander of my most Honourable Order of the Bath, who has for some time resided at the Court of Your Majesty in the Character of my Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, I have directed him to deliver to Your Majesty this Letter of Recall. Having myself had ample reason to be satisfied with the zeal, ability, and fidelity with which Sir Arthur Charles Magenis has executed my Orders on all occasions during his mission, I trust that Your Majesty will also have found his conduct deserving of Your approbation and Esteem; and in this pleasing Confidence I avail myself of the present opportunity to renew to You the Assurances of the invariable Attachment and high Esteem with which I am,” with the closing sentiments in Victoria’s hand, “Sir my Brother, Your Majesty’s good Sister.” Unfortunately, Oscar I of Sweden would die one month after receiving this letter. VICTORIA RECALLS THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR TO SWEDEN AND NORWAY: “HAVING MYSELF HAD AMPLE REASON TO BE SATSIFIED WITH THE ZEAL, ABILITY, AND FIDELITY WITH WHICH SIR ARTHUR CHARLES MAGENIS HAS EXECUTED MY ORDERS ON ALL OCCASIONS DURING HIS MISSION, I TRUST THAT YOUR MAJESTY WILL ALSO HAVE FOUND HIS CONDUCT DESERVING OF YOUR APPROBATION AND ESTEEM” Correspondence between monarchs is extremely rare and highly desirable. We were unable to locate any other letters from Victoria to Oscar I available for sale in the past 25 years; however, two similar correspondence from Victoria to the King of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies sold for $2,151 in February 2006 and $2,390 in April 2008 at Heritage Auctions. Contains two pages on a single leaf, measures 9.25 by 7.5 inches, created at Buckingham Palace on June 5, 1859, and in very fine condition with only evidence of mounting on the borders of the first page.
