After graduating from the Graduate School of Composition at Tokyo University of the Arts, he went on to study at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris as a French government scholarship student, where he studied under Olivier Messiaen. While studying contemporary music, he made his debut as a free jazz pianist in Paris in 1973. He graduated from the Conservatory with the highest honors in '76. Since returning to Japan, he has composed many orchestral and various works, film scores, and documentary films. His representative works include the piano suite "Klee" composed from the impression of Paul Klee's paintings, and the theme song "Is Paris Burning?" from the NHK specials "Century of Moving Images" and "New Century of Moving Images," and he is also regarded as a "piano poet" due to the beauty of his tone as a pianist. In 2010, he formed the "Takashi Kako Quartet" consisting of piano, violin, viola and cello, and is actively engaged in composing and concerts for it.
