It retailed for $350, that's over $2,600 today! The Pioneer SX-727 is widely considered one of the better receivers ever made by the company. With its beautiful walnut cabinet, elegant look, high build quality and versatile connectivity it is definitely a classic.The SX-727 is a sensitive AM/FM stereo receiver with up to 195 watts of power into 4 ohms, two tape monitor circuits, linear FM dial scale and supreme versatility. Upper range power output, unusual FM selectivity and sensitivity and the versatility of units costing much, much more, the SX-727 stereo receiver from Pioneer puts together all of these hi-fi virtues and offers the music enthusiast a new high in stereo value.Versatility is the keynote of this attractively-designed unit, the SX-727 handles up to two tape decks, two turntables, three pairs of speaker systems and a microphone. Its sensitive FM section is loaded with the very latest of solid state circuitry - the better to offer distortion-free reception. Its direct-coupled power amplifier circuitry means a wide power bandwidth and superb frequency response. While the manual gives this a "Music Power" rating of 195 watts @ 4Ω, we prefer to use the more reasonable "Continuous Power" rating of 74 Watts, or 37 W/Ch into 8Ω through full spectrum and both channels fully driven. While it does have a reasonable Total Harmonic Distortion of 0.5% at full power, bring down the power just 35% and you have a much more impressive 0.03% THD! Remember, these are what audiophiles call "Vintage Watts," from an era where, unlike today, it was a sin to manipulate or elaborate the power ratings!The front panel has both 1/4" Headphone & Mic jacks while the rear offers three speaker zones, an Aux Input, two Tape Loops, one with the PLAY/REC DIN jack found in the higher-end offerings of the era and the other ready for 4-Channel applications, and two stereo Phono Inputs with a grounding post for your turntables! It also has three AC outlets, one switched & two unswitched, and a power fuse-holder with voltage adjustment for foreign use. The SX-727 weighs in at just under 31 lbs and measures a sizable 15-3/8" x 5-7/8" x 19-1/16" wide! NOTE: This receiver uses Pioneers speaker connectors for connecting your speakers to the custom speaker jacks. We are including the pictured pair for using the main speaker outputs, you will need an additional set to use the second speaker outputs. They are available from multiple eBay sellers. Condition:This rare receiver is in "Very Good" condition with minor signs of use and a nice, bright dial! Aside from a few front panel scuffs, the only thing worth mentioning is a few scratches & dings to the veneer as seen in the pics. All the original knobs are present & complete, as are the feet and attached AM Antenna & AC cord. The manual has gone missing, but no worries, it's available online or we will send you the PDF file directly on request. A bonus NEW FM Dipole Antenna is included. Please do inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.Service:On inspection, this unit was working, just some scratchy or inconsistent controls and a dim dial, so as with all vintage receivers it went to our tech for servicing. First, Pioneer used certain transistors throughout this model that have known issues after 40 years, so whether or not they are still working, our tech insists on replacing these transistors as they will assuredly fail some time in the near future. While our tech does not believe in doing a "shotgun" style "re-cap" on most gear made from the late '70's on, he does make sure there are no capacitors with detectable or known issues. Pioneer used blue Sanyo electrolytic capacitors throughout this model that are notorious for breaking down, so every one was upgraded along with all those on the power supply board and several others that showed signs of overheating. Also, the power supply transistor heat-sinks were secured and new compound applied! A total of 18 transistors and 13 electrolytic capacitors were upgraded to brand new. high quality parts from Onsemi, Nichicon, Rubycon, etc., no used or NOS components! Once running, our testing revealed a sluggish Tuning meter and attempts to refurbish it were unsuccessful. So we replaced it with one culled from another SX-727 which is responding much more crisply. It's this kind of thoughtful, preventative servicing that makes it smart to buy from a company with an experienced, in-house technician!Only a few lamps were still working, but as they were most likely going to fail soon all the lamps were replaced with long-life LED's! We installed the new frosted Cool White LED's in the dial which shine through the blue dial with better consistently, then Green LEDs were chosen for the meters that contrast the dial beautifully. But if you prefer the original Warm White meter color that shines through blue just let us know BEFORE buying or sending an offer and we will switch it out for you free of charge! Even the hard to replace pointer lamp and all six of the indicator lamps were also upgraded so you won't have to worry about them either. In fact, we weren't happy with the lack of illumination the unidirectional LED's give on these pointers, others just resort to using an incandescent. But as longevity is the whole idea behind the LED upgrade, our tech has come up with a custom way to install a 1-segment LED that illuminates the pointer much better. All vintage receivers receive the following services and much more, all performed by our qualified technician:Lid is removed & unit is inspected to determine if any attempted amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacementThe exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailedWhile the front panel is removed for cleaning, all attachments are re-glued and dried out foam inserts replaced. All switches & pots are cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers), while those with special needs receive the less aggressive DeoxIT F-5All lamps that are out, or believed to be prone to failure, are replaced if necessary. LEDs are used whenever compatibleAny faulty components, or those with known issues, such as jacks, fuse-holders, feet, etc., are replacedAll PC boards are inspected; all questionable solder joints are re-flowedAll electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, those that are at risk or have known issues are checked with the Huntron Tracker (allows evaluation while in-circuit so component does not need to be removed). All questionable caps are replaced with brand new parts, not NOS!DC offset is adjusted & channel levels are calibrated & balancedTuner is cleaned and both AM & FM alignedFront panel is cleaned & detailed before reassemblyCabinet is cleaned & detailed, any wood is polished with Old EnglishTesting:After servicing, we set it up on our test bench and it did not disappoint, both channels drove our speakers with the warm, distortion-free signal these analog receivers are known for. All inputs, outputs and features were confirmed operational and the tuner spins smoothly. We are in a remote area, still we were able to pull in all our local FM stations with the included wire antenna, activating the tuning meter and lighting the Stereo lamp.
