This steering axle has a slotted head so you can easily turn it with a screw driver. In addition, our PRO Graphite Coated Steering Axle is bent 1.5 degrees. This bend will steer your wheel left or right so your car rolls straight down the track. Getting your pinewood derby car to steer straight is a critical speed adjustment and it is the most challenging and time-consuming aspect of building a pinewood derby car. If your car doesn't steer straight, your wheels hit the guide rails, causing your car to lose valuable speed. The PRO Graphite Coated Steering Axle is made from a PRO Super Speed grooved and nickel plated axle. To use the steering axle, just replace one of your front axles with the PRO Graphite Coated Steering Axle and gently turn the axle with a screw driver to make that wheel steer left or right until your car rolls straight for 6 to 8 feet. It’s as easy as that! You can also use the steering axle to create a Rail Rider car, which is a technique we only recommend for experienced car builders who have a test track.
