This is a prehistoric Equus Complicatus Fossil horse tooth from the Pleistocene age approximately 2,588,000 to 11,700 years ago and it was collected in South Carolina, USA. Researchers believe that horses actually originated in North America. The mammal Equus Complicatus also known as the complex-tooth horse was the most common horse species in the Southern and Eastern parts of what is now the United States. It was once believed that during the Pleistocene age there were over fifty species of Equus in North America alone which were described by paleontologists, based mainly on variation in the sizes of fossil bones. However, there is a consensus among scientists today that the number of Pleistocene species should be reduced. In fact some paleontologists believe that there were really only two Equus horse species present in North America during the mid and late Pleistocene: a caballine and a stilt-legged equine. Both species, they suggest, showed great geographic variation in size because of adaptation to different environments which caused earlier researchers to classify them into to many species. This specimen measures 3.04 inches long by 1.19 inches wide. Great condition with minor chips. This South Carolina fossilized Equus horse tooth would be a nice addition to any fossil or rock and mineral collection.
