Description: Prefete Duffaut (1923-2012) Bio A leading 20th-century modern artist in Haiti, Préfète Duffaut attended Le Centre d’Art d’Haïti, a pioneering school founded by DeWitt Peters in the mid-1940s. Duffaut’s rich imagination draws on his connections to both Catholicism and Vodou, often employing motifs and symbols from both spiritual practices in his paintings. In 1951, Duffaut and peers Rigaud Benoit and Wilson Bigaud were invited to contribute murals to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince. His two contributions, The Temptation of Christ and The Processional Road, include persistent themes the artist returned to throughout his career: representations of the Virgin Mary and imaginary cityscapes. Duffaut exhibited his work widely during his lifetime. An early career highlight was a group show of Haitian art at the Stedelijk Museum in 1950, and in 1968, he was awarded first prize at the World Festival of Black Arts in Dakar. A major traveling survey of Haitian art toured the Brooklyn Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the New Orleans Museum of Art in 1978–79. A documentary film on Duffaut’s life and work, Préfète Duffaut: Piety and Urban Imagination, directed by Arnold Antonin, was released in 2006.
