In 1897, he led the Vienna Secession movement that advocated the representation of ideas, dreams, and states of mind. This influence manifested itself in Klimt’s work in a dreamlike atmosphere, elegance, and eroticism. One of Klimt’s notable works, Portrait of a Lady depicts a young woman with a black beauty mark located beneath her eye, sensually glancing over her shoulder against a dreamy green background. Composed in an expressionist style near the end of his career, the painting features Klimt’s classic trademark of portraying the rosiness of the cheeks, adding life into the dull-colored skin of the lady. It was revealed in an X-ray analysis in 1996 that the Portrait of a Lady was painted over one of his previous paintings, believed to be a sketch of his lover. Due to her rapid death, Klimt double painted over the original portrait to cover his grief. Drawing inspiration from the mysterious lost and found history of the Portrait of a Lady, the collectible features Klimt’s painting with a touch of peeling cracks to depict the signs of canvas decay of this missing masterpiece.
