Many of these selections contain hot jazz solos. The Cotton PIckers: Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Cotton Pickers was the generic band name that Brunswick Records used on its small jazz band recordings made in 1922-1923, 1924-1925, and again in 1929. The earliest incarnation of Cotton Pickers was led by clarinetist Bennie Krueger and included trumpeter Phil Napoleon, trombonist Miff Mole, and pianist Frank Signorelli, all of who also appeared in the Memphis Five. California Ramblers - Tracks 7 and 8 The California Ramblers had many famous jazz musicians associated with the band. These included Red Nichols, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Elwood Madeo, Jr. They became some of the most famous and influential figures of the Big Band era. Louis Armstrong And His Orchestra - Tracks 9, 10, 11, 12, 16 and 17 Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" trumpet and cornet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance. With his instantly recognizable gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also skilled at scat singing (vocalizing using sounds and syllables instead of actual lyrics). Chicago Rhythm Kings - Tracks 13 and 14 Popular jazz band of the 1920's musicians included: Muggsy Spanier (cornet), Frank Teschemacher (clarinet), Mezz Mezzrow (alto sax), Joe Sullivan (piano), Eddie Condon (banjo), Jim Lannigan (tuba), Gene Krupa (drums) and Red McKenzie (vocals). Bernie Cummings And His New Yorker Hotel Orchestra - Track 15 The Bernie Cummins Orchestra recorded frequently for such labels as Brunswick, Columbia, Victor, Decca, Gennett, Vocalion and Bluebird. The band had many appearances in the Mid-West and was well known for its live performances. Its smooth style was much loved in larger hotels and ballrooms.
