Up for sale is a very nice antique Nineteenth Century hard back book titled: THE POEMS of JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER. This book is beautifully ornate with a decorated front cover and spine; the pages have a gold gilt on all edges. This book was published by John W. Lovell of New York and was a luxury book in the Nineteenth Century. I could not find an actual publication date, I believe it was published in 1885 or thereabouts. I acquired this book from a private collection. It was gently handled and treasured done through the years. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: John Greenleaf Whittier: (December 17, 1807 - September 7, 1892) was an American Quaker poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Frequently listed as one of the Fireside Poets, he was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings as well as his book Snow-Bound. CONDITION: This old book is complete and intact, in very good condition for its age. The covers are beautifully decorated and embossed. The covers are in excellent condition, very nice. The inside covers are in very good condition, with some cracking and separation present the front hinge (see photo). The back hinge is in very nice condition and both boards are tight to the binding. There are no bookplates, writing or markings present on the inside covers or end papers. The pages are in very good condition, pages are crisp, all pages are tight to the binding. The pages have a gold gilt on all edges. The gilt is in very nice condition. There is no writing or markings on any pages. The decorated spine is in excellent condition, very nice, the lettering is easily read. This poetry book comes from a smoke free home.
