IX INTRODUCTION A GOOD deal of the ground covered in the first part of this Introduction has already been explored in biographical studies of Thomson, but as these are for the most part out of print, and as no study has taken account of all the manuscript material which is now available,1 it seemed best to include a short biography here. The Life of Thomson by Henry S. Salt, and the Memoir which Bertram Dobell prefixed to his two-volume edition of the Poems, are the chief published sources of information.2 These books are out of print, but Imogene Walker's valuable Critical Study, with a bibliography, is obtainable.3 A MR. ROBERT GRAVES has told us that the nest of the Muse is 'littered with the jawbones and entrails of poets',4 and certainly a glance at the lives of nineteenth-century poets discovers much evidence in his support. Yet I will not see myself the desolate bard, His natural friendships cast and his loves buried, Auguring doom like some black carrion bird was Mr. Graves's own early protest against such a view,5 and something of this ambivalence is to be found, I think, in James Thomson, the 'laureate of pessimism' as some admirers named him; a poet who often saw himself as dedicated to despair and as a son of the devil, who yet had in him a tough, practical capacity for humdrum work, and a longing for the delightful state that is disparaged as 'ordinary bourgeois happiness'. 278 pages.
