"Uncle Mark" mailed the same Rangitoto RPPC (Real Photo Post Card) to his niece in London that day. When the ship reached the Pacific entrance of the Canal at Cristobal on 29 April, "Uncle Mark" mailed this RPPC to his niece, and was rewarded by a 5c Canal Zone stamp, and a perfect, complete and very scarce Panama Canal map slogan machine postmark ""THE PANAMA CANAL / SHORT ROUTE TO WORLD MARKETS".* * Canal Zone "map" postmarks had variations of the last line of this postmark over the years, e.g. "SPEEDS WORLD COMMERCE", "SHORTENS SEA ROUTES", "GATEWAY OF WORLD TRADE", etc., an indication of the great value of the Canal to Pitcairn Island and other small communities.
