Description: Using a joint airport, Greenville and Spartanburg, important textile centers in northern South Carolina, were added to Piedmont Airlines' Air Mail Route 87 on April 1, 1967. Piedmont Airlines’ new east-west service, as a stop between Asheville and Charlotte, replaced similar service which had been provided for many years by Delta Air Lines' Air Mail Route 24 and Air Mail Route 54. This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 87 flight from Greenville, South Carolina to Norfolk, Virginia (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 87E89. The USAir (later renamed USAirways) purchase of Piedmont Airlines was approved by the Department of Transportation. The sale was completed in October 1987. The two airlines operated separately until August 5, 1989, when all operations and schedules were integrated. Piedmont ceased to exist on August 5. US Airways was a major American airline that ceased to operate independently when the Federal Aviation Administration granted a single operating certificate for US Airways and American Airlines on April 8, 2015.
