John Leech John Leech (1817-1864), an English caricaturist notable for his contributions to Punch Magazine. Initially published etchings & sketching of comic London caricatures under the pseudonym A Pen Esquire. Leech first contributed to Punch magazine in August 1841, which became a long and fruitful association. In 1843 Leech created the first illustrations of characters from Charles Dickens novella "A Christmas carol". Leech also published 3 social caricature collections under the title, "Pictures of Life & Character from the Collection of Mr Punch", 1854, 1860 & 1863. In association with Sir John Tenniel, Leech created what has become the conventional image of John Bull, instantly recognisable in his Union Jack waistcoat. Punch Magazine Punch Magazine (The London Charivari) was established in 1841 (and ran until 1992) as a humorous & satirical British weekly. Founded by Henry Mayhew & Ebenezer Landells, and it was edited by Mayhew & Mark Lemon. Most influential in the period 1840-1850 it helped coin the phrase 'cartoon' and had weekly sales of circa 40,000 copies rising to 100,000 copies by 1910. Due to financial difficulties Punch magazine was sold to Bradbury & Evans (Printers & Publishers) in 1845, who capitalised on new mass printing technologies that were evolving. Archibald Henning designed the cover of the first issue. Richard Doyle designed what became the masthead in 1849.Punch artists included John Leech, Richard Doyle, John Tenniel, Charles Keene and Charles Dicken's. They became known as the Punch Brotherhood in the period 1840's-1850's. Punch magazine became an internationally read magazine gaining fans across the world particularly in the world of politics where it had satirically caricatured many politicians.
