Designed and manufactured by Piasecki Helicopter Corporation in the late 40s and early 50s of the XX century. Decommissioned in 1964. More than 370 machines were produced (in several modifications).In 1956 the company's name was changed to Vertol Aircraft Corporation, in 1960 it was bought by the Boeing Aircraft Company 1960 and renamed Boeing-Vertol.In 1945, the US Navy issued a proposal to develop a compact search and rescue/utility helicopter for use from aircraft carriers and other warships. The Piasecki Helicopter Corporation developed the XHJP-1 helicopter prototype and first flew in March 1948. The helicopter was approved by the Navy for mass production. The operation of the machine in the US Navy and Marine Corps began in 1949.The helicopter is made according to the longitudinal scheme. The rotors are three-bladed, with a diameter of 11 meters, the blades were folded to store the machine in the hangar of an aircraft carrier. The power plant is one Continental R975-46 piston radial engine with a take-off power of 550 hp. (410 kW). For search and rescue operations, the helicopter was equipped with an electric sliding door and a lifting winch.Helicopters of the HUP series for the Navy were produced in several versions: HUP-1, -2, and 3. HUP-2 was the first serial helicopter equipped with an autopilot. A modification was produced for the US Army.
