It was established by Somdet Phra Bowonratchachao Maha Sakdiphonsep, Krom Phra Ratchawang Bowon Sathan Mongkhon in the reign of King Rama III. This temple was once the residence of four Thai Supreme Patriarchs and is the location of Mahamakut Buddhist University, the first educational institution for the Thammayut sect of monks in the country, and the temple of King Rama VI and IX.
