HE COMMISSIONED THE SCULPTOR HANDYSIDE RITCHIE TO CREATE SEVERAL STATUES OF PROTESTANT NOTABLES FOR THE TOWN CEMETERY OF WHICH THIS IS THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED. MARGARET WILSON WAS ONE OF THE WIGTOWN MARTYRS DROWNED IN THE SOLWAY FIRTH IN 1685 FOR REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE ROYAL SUPREMACY OVER THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND. THE FIGURES WERE ERECTED IN 1859 AND THE CUPOLA ADDED IN 1867.
