Capmaking was a flourishing trade in Coventry in the late 15th/early 16th Centuries and in 1531 the craft guild asked for a chapel. Initially this one dedicated to St Thomas was assigned to them initially alongside the cardmakers and saddlers whose chapel it was but the cost of upkeep became too much for the latter and within six years it became the sole preserve of the cappers.
