Description: Philippine "Maria Clara" Folklore Hand Carved Wood Chess Set c1960s According to Jim Joannous, a chess collector, this chess set was inspired by the Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal, who lived from 1861-1896. The King is depicted as Crisostomo Ibarra and Maria Clara as the Queen. The set originated from the Batan Islands in Batanes Province. The lighter wood could be Red Sandalwood or Acacia and the black pieces are made of Kamagong. Chess pieces are in excellent condition. Red felt lines the bottom of each piece.
