Description: P.G.T. BEAUREGARD. P.G.T. Beauregard (1818–1893) was a Brigadier General of the Confederate Provisional Army who commanded the forces at Charleston where he ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter. CIVIL WAR-DATED AUTOGRAPH ENDORSEMENT SIGNED BY P.G.T. BEAUREGARD, THE CONFEDERATE GENERAL WHO ORDERED THE BOMBARDMENT OF FORT SUMTER STARTING THE WAR Civil War-dated autograph endorsement in pencil signed by P.G.T. Beauregard with his initials, “G.T.B.,” written in response to a telegraph from General Martin L. Smith in Vicksburg, Mississippi: “Send them to Grenada arms will…sent to them as soon as possible.” Smith’s message reads: “The 4th & 7th La. regts here unarmed but reorganized numbering about 450 each for…what the purpose regarding.” GENERAL BEAUREGARD ORDERS GENERAL MARTIN L. SMITH TO SEND HIS TROOPS TO GRENADA FOR WEAPONS TO ASSIST WITH THE DEFENSES OF VICKSBURG General Martin was in command of constructing the defenses of Vicksburg and was requesting weapons for his troops from General Beauregard. Beauregard ordered Martin to send his troops to Grenada, MS to acquire the needed weapons. Although the Vicksburg defenses did stop General Ulysses S. Grant’s first attempt to take the city, Grant ultimately captured Vicksburg in May 1863.
