Description: Smithfield Ham Packer P. D. Gwaltney Jr & Co. Dry Goods Store, Smithfield, Va Store Wrapping Paper. Brown wrapping paper sheet is folded in half and has some tears and is fragile. The wrapping paper was printed with advertising for the Dry Goods store and the bottom has the top portion of another sheet P. D. Gwaltney Jr., & Co. The brown Kraft paper would have been on an 18” roll so you could tear off as much as needed. Pembroke Decatur Gwaltney Jr. bought the Dry Goods store from his father in 1882. Then started the meat packing business which would become Gwaltney, famous for the Smithfield Ham. Pembroke D. Gwaltney’s father Pembroke D. Gwaltney Sr. owned the Gwaltney Bunkley Peanut Company and was the peanut king and the richest man in the south. Museum quality piece of history here. Shipped flat, not rolled.
