Notes on gravure printing: Before the widespread use of photo offset printing in the early 1940s, many photographic and fine art books and periodicals were printed using the sheet fed gravure process. This technology differs from the hand pulled gravures featured in Alfred Stieglitz’s Camera Work and made famous by artists such as Alvin Langdon Colburn and Paul Strand. In sheet fed gravures the copper printing plate used to create the image was first exposed to a ruled screen rather than being dusted with rosin to create the screen pattern (as was the case with plates to be hand printed on an etching press.) Yet the process was still based on the intaglio principal whereby the depth of impressions on the printing plate control the lightness or darkness of the image (rather than the dot pattern used in offset printing.) Sheet fed gravure also used a flexible plate that could be wrapped around the cylinder of a mechanized printing press rather the thick plate used on a flat bed etching press. Unlike offset printing, sheet fed gravure has virtually no visible screen pattern. The rotary press was also capable of laying down a heavy load of ink, resulting in extremely rich blacks. Additionally, because of the infinite range of depth of the etched wells that carried the ink, beautiful gradations in the highlight areas could be achieved. In the mid-1930s before offset printing became widespread, a number of photographic publications, including the Leica and U.S. Camera annuals, were printed in sheet fed gravure by the Beck Engraving Company, a leader in the field. Karl Blossfeltd's famous botanical images were gravure printed as were the pictorial images of Adolf Fassbender and the legendary French magazine Arts et Metiers.
