Hardcover, with dust jacket. 502 pages. This copy of the First Edition is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Vernon Duke on the blank page facing the front cover with a MUSICAL QUOTATION: "For Gene Bergen / [2 bars of music with lyrics "Passport to Paris"] / (There's no such song) / Vernon Duke / 1955" Vernon Duke (1903 - 1969) was an American composer who wrote the songs "Taking a Chance on Love," "I Can't Get Started," and "April in Paris," as well as the Broadway musical "Cabin in the Sky." He also wrote a Diaghilev ballet and symphonic music that was praised by critics. Passport to Paris is Duke's autobiography. Condition is used. Dust jacket is worn and mended with tape and there is a perforation on the front, as shown. There is wear to the cover and crumbling at the top of the spine. The binding is intact and the pages are clean, without bookplates or extraneous markings. Also included will be a photocopy of Duke's obituary from the New York Times, which was found inside the book. We believe the person to whom Duke inscribed this volume was Eugene Bergen, a violinist who played with the New York Philharmonic from 1962 to 1986, and had previously played with Glenn Miller's orchestra during World War II. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
