Description: The Crowninshield-Stevens-Brinley-Vanderbilt-Whitney Copy of The Bay Psalm Book, to be Sold by Direction of the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Trust for the Sole Benefit of The North Country Community Hospital, Glen Cove, New York, 1947. Softcover, staple-bound in light blue wrapper. Around 22 pages. This pamphlet was issued to promote the sale of an exceedingly rare copy of the Bay Psalm Book (1640) believed to be the first book printed in America. Found in the pamphlet, and also included for the purchaser, is an article clipped from the Philadelphia Inquirer, April 15, 2013, about the impending auction of another copy of the Bay Psalm Book. The article reported that the 1947 auction had yielded $151,000, while the 2013 auction was anticipated to yield as much as $30 million (in fact, the copy in 2013 sold for $14,165,000). The 1947 pamphlet contains the conditions of sale, a preface concerning the book's history, details about the book, photographs of selected pages, and -- most valuable to historians and researchers -- a census of recorded copies of the Bay Psalm Book The pamphlet is in nice condition. The staple-binding remains intact. There is a tape repair to the upper right-hand corner of the inside back cover. There is some tanning at the borders of the front and back cover. The pamphlet was printed on thick, glossy paper, which has held up well. There is slight dog-ear folding to the lower corner of the pages.
