Description: The Parisian Novelty Company was founded in 1898 and operated until 2008, when its button division was acquired by the Matchless Group and now operates as Matchless Parisian Novelty, Inc. In addition to buttons, the original company sold other novelty products such as compacts and 4 ft. measuring tapes, all for use in advertising efforts by other companies. The casing for this tape is 1 and 3/8 inches wide and advertises the Commonwealth Life Insurance Company of Louisville, Kentucky, founded in 1904 and after several other owners ended up as a part of J.P. Morgan Chase in 2008. This particular tape was found in a drawer in my paternal grandmother's antique Singer Sewing machine; she lived in Gadsden, Alabama. The item is in good condition and the tape works. The tape has what may seem to be some cryptic information in tiny print along with the company name: "Pat. 7-10-17, 11-4-19" These are dates indicating two U.S. Patents the company filed for the tape container, 1,233,063 and 1,320,767 for the dates given.
