Description: Paragon Cup & Saucer Demitasse Coffee Can Maroon Gold Scrollwork Rose 1938-1952 Exquisite Decorative COFFEE CAN Flat CUP & SAUCER Set, GOLD Scrollwork w/Large CABBAGE ROSE inside cup & in well of Saucer, Dark MAROON & White, from Staffordshire, England, circa 1938-1952 DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand decorated cup & saucer set was produced with a beautiful, large pink cabbage rose on the inside of the cup and on the well of the saucer. The outside of the cup and the saucer is a dark maroon with an extensive band of gold scrollwork. The design looks so classic. The simple handle is trimmed in gold as is foot of the cup, the verge of the saucer, and the smooth rims. This makes a beautiful display set or can be used every day. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold. DIMENSIONS: The cup has a diameter of 2 1/16" with a height of 2 1/4". The deep saucer has a diameter of 4 3/8" and height of 3/4". The capacity of the cup is 3 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: Paragon China has its roots in the Star China Company of Longton, Staffordshire in England. In 1899, the son of the John Anysley II (of Anysley China), Herbert James, along with several associates formed Star China Company. To emphasize their high quality, Star China introduced the name Paragon China in 1903 and later changed the company name to Paragon China Company in 1920. In 1927, Hugh Irving became sole proprietor upon the retirement of Herbert Aynsley, his father-in-law. Paragon was granted several Warrants of Appointment by the Royal Family in the 1933-1958 time period. Thomas C. Wild & Sons (Royal Albert) took over Paragon China in 1960, then merged with the Lawley Group to become Allied English Potteries in 1964, subsequently Paragon and Royal Albert joined the Royal Doulton Group in 1972, and finally the Paragon name discontinued in 1992.
