Description: This large hand carved figure was purchased in Waigani, Port Morsby, Papua New Guinea. It has an elongated head with painted face and embedded shell shell eyes. The wood arms are bent at the elbow and the hands clasp a painted and striped flute. The figure perches on a round three legged stool with the feet resting on the front of the platform. Tied raffia decorates the wrists, ears, nose and waist. It stands 22.5" high and is 6.5" across the base. The surface is mostly smooth wood with traces of clay or paint in areas. There are two a small cracks in the rim of the stool, another on the tush of the figure and another small one on the back of the base. I believe these are common in old primitive wood pieces and in not way impact the integrity of the piece. It is an interesting carving and a good representation of the art of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea, officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, is a country in Oceania that comprises the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and its offshore islands in Melanesia. It shares its only land border with Indonesia to the west and its other close neighbors are Australia to the south and the Solomon Islands to the east. Its capital, located on its southern coast, is Port Moresby.
