Description: When Friendship Airport, built to accommodate jets which National Airport in Washington could not handle, was opened 10 miles south of Baltimore and 25 miles north of Washington, Pan American launched service from this area to Paris (with a stop at New York) and subsequently extended the route to include various cities in Europe and the Middle East. Until Dulles International Airport was built several years later, Europe-bound mail from Washington was dispatched through its Post Office and Airport Mail Facility and loaded at Friendship Airport. This cover was carried on the June 18, 1960 inaugural Foreign Air Mail Route 18 flight from the Friendship Airport Mail Facility in Washington, DC to Paris, France (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail Flights (FAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F18-315F.
