The Thompsons "were working people who lived across the lake, not the 'Old Guard' of the fabulously wealthy who withered in Palm Beach each year." But, as a newspaper and telegram delivery boy, David "had many encounters with the wealthy, including such personalities as Doris Duke, the Kennedys, and Gloria Swanson."
