Description: Original family ownership’s vintage (1950’s) pair of large Decoys Unlimited (Erie, PA) working, solid wood, bluebill duck decoys with original centerboard wood keels (with metal hooks) and original glass eyes. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Both decoys have retained much of their original, rich browns, cream and blue colors. The seller believes that the painting method is a “Consistent Comb” procedure, valued by collectors. Both fixed (non-moving) necks are firmly attached with no looseness. Neither decoy has any gunshot pellet marks. Measurements – Length: 17”. Width: 7”; Height: 7” (see photographs). Both decoys show wear that is commensurate with their age and hunting use as follows: · Both decoys have approximately 6-8 paint scrap/rub marks on their bodies. · Both decoys’ tails have wear and paint scrap marks. · One decoy has its underside blue bill damaged with a 3/4” wood chip missing and a 2” painted, chipped area on the bottom (see photographs). Both decoys’ bottoms are white ink, company-stamped “Decoys Unlimited, RD# 5, Wattsburg Road, Erie, Penna”. Background Per various websites’ research, Jack Sweet, already an award-winning carver, founded Decoys Unlimited (named to resemble Ducks Unlimited) in 1953 and remained in business in Erie, PA until 1976. The company produced various commercial grade balsa/wood headed/keeled hunting decoys in different sizes on a twenty-four (24) capacity duplicator, then hand painted and finished with the comb painting technique. Sweet sold his decoys primarily through Abercrombie & Fitch and advertised the decoys in Hal Sorenson’s “Decoy Collectors Guide” in the 1960’s. Please review the twenty-four (24) photographs to assist in your assessment of the two (2) decoys’ condition. The photographs are an integral part of the decoys’ descriptions. Always kept in dry, non-smoking homes. Thank you for viewing this post.
