Pair Early Masons Ironstone Plates, Basket Japan Pattern, C 1820

Description: Here are a tempting pair of early Masons ironstone plates in the Japan Basket pattern, circa 1820. They are hand decorated in the distinctive "Basket Japan" pattern, which is one of Mason's well known chinoiserie patterns, using bold hand painted enamels of cobalt blue and burnt orange all in various shades and possibly over a light printed outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 103 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-circa 1848" as published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The plates measure approximately 8.5 inches in diameter and sit on a 5.25 inch base. They have a deep well of approximately .5 inches. The plates are fully marked to the base with one of Mason's earliest recorded impressed marks stating " Masons Patent Ironstone China" in a single line, signifying a very early piece dating to within the first 5 years of Mason's Ironstone production which started in 1813. It also has the free flowing hand painted style only seen on the early pieces. The Mason Collectors Club code number is OD1 Basket Japan, the name being taken from the 1818 auction list discussed in Godden's "Guide to Ironstone, Stone and Granite Wares". A similar pattern is illustrated on a tureen in Godden's "Mason’s China and the Ironstone Wares", plate 151. The item(s) are antique and sold as is.
