Description: Wonderful pair of Asian carved wooden corbelsEstimated mid to late 1800s While the subjects are Chinese gods (Confucius and a female diety) in the clouds, some of the carving looks to have a Thai or Malaysian style. I do not have any provenance, so I am playing it safe and not committing to a point or origin or specific time frame/dynasty. The condition is pretty good for being about 200 years old. These were at one point in their life polychromed/painted and small specks of paint remain in the the cracks, so you can tell what colors things were. These types of corbel became popular in Chinese architecture of the Ming and Qing dynasty. A corbel is placed at the intersection of a column and beam on the exterior of the building and added "pizazz" to the look of the structure. A previous owner had customized iron brackets made for them, so they are well protected. There are mounting holes so they can be hung on a wall. I believe the bases could be drilled and the stands mounted to a wood/stone base and then these could be freestanding pieces. Lot of options! Female diety: This is one-sided carving of the diety holding a lotus pod in the clouds. One section of the stem of the lotus pod has been lost (see photos) but the key elements are clear and intact. This is a pierced carving, and the mount has been created so that you can still see through the piece. This is still a functioning corbel, with the pins that were used for mounting are still a part of the piece. Confuscius diety: This is a one-sided carving of the diety holding a staff/rod with a coin or other element at the end of the rod. The carving is almost totally intact, but this piece has more splits and cracking that the other one (see photos). There is one crack that is visible from the front on a background element. The other cracks are only visible on the reverse and the top, so they don't detract from the artwork. This is still a functioning corbel, with the pins that were used for mounting are still a part of the piece. These will be shipped with the utmost care. Each item packaged and wrapped seperately and then enclosed in a single shipping package. About my store: All photos are of the item you will be getting. I don't use photos ripped from other listings. I have it in my hands, have examined every inch of it, and if there are any flaws there will be a photo of that scratch, nick, flea bite, or smudge. There is a large amount of trust necessary to buy and sell over the internet, and I try to be as transparent and up front as possible so that you are totally aware of what you are buying. I'm a bit of a nerd, and try to research items that I am posting and my descriptions are NEVER written by a bot! They may be long, irreverent, too detailed, or complicated, but I believe it is worth honoring beautiful things from the past by learning about the craftsmen and women who labored to create the piece. If the item is fragile or breakable, I over-pack the item for shipping. My shipping weights may look excessive, but that is because there is a lot of extra cardboard, foam, or other padding involved to make sure an item arrives safely. Items broken in shipment are costly, even though all items are shipped insured. There is typically a small handling fee to pay for the boxes, padding, and tape it takes to ge the item to you. If you buy multiple items, I can combine shipping where practical. Make sure to send me a message and let me know. I do not accept returns, all items are sold as is. Feel free to ask questions, inquire about specifics, or request more photos before you click that button! You're buying from a genuine hillbilly living in small-town Arkansas (Pop 487). Post office is only open a couple of hours a day, so it may take an extra day to get USPS things out. And I have to drive to the big city to ship UPS or FedEx, so please be patient. I will overcommunicate, so just get used to it. I am not a nameless, faceless, heartless mega corporation. I will open a conversation as soon as we get things going, and welcome your honest feedback.
