Description: PAINTING Watercolor ~ GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST ~ 1932 Double Sided ROBERT PUDLICH A beautifully appealing Expressionist watercolor painting from German artist Robert Pudlich (1905-1962). The image depicts depicts a partially clad seated woman in a very flamboyant hat, on the reverse is a strong pencil drawing of, possibly, the same model standing. The painting is hand signed and dated in the lower right by the artist and it measures 10 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, including mat the dimensions are 15 x 10 1/8 inches. It is housed in the original mat, paper has mild age toning and it is afixed to the mat with old brown gummed tape, otherwise in excellent original condition. Robert Pudlich (1905-1962) was a German painter, illustrator and set designer of the Lost Generation. His artistic syle was informed by the New Objectivity movement (Neue Sachlichkeit), a later offshoot of Expressionism. From 1924 to 1926 Pudlich studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There he attended the Lothar class of Kunowski. In 1927 he acquired his credentials for teaching art. In 1928 he made a study trip to southern France. In the same year he received the Grand Art Prize of the City of Düsseldorf. Pudlich was represented by the art dealer Johanna Ey and was a member of the German Artists' Association. In 1936 he participated in the NS-Ausstellung Westfront in Essen. In 1937 he received invitations to the International Exhibition of Paintings of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. In 1939, the city of Düsseldorf honoured him for his painting Dame in Blau. From 1942 to 1946, Pudlich lived at Libermé Castle in Kettenis near Eupen and mainly survived through book illustration. After the Second World War, Pudlich designed stage sets and costumes for productions in Düsseldorf and Hamburg as well as for the Städtische Oper Berlin from 1947 onwards. During this time, he created a series of monumental murals, including for the Düsseldorf Opera House. In 1951 he was appointed juror of the art exhibition Iron and Steel. In 1955 he took on a professorship at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
