Description: PA-266 " Rare & Choice " PCGS VF30 9d 1785 Pennsylvania Colonial Currency Click images to enlarge Description A rare note in any condition, and especially so in Choice Very Fine. March 16, 1785 "NINE PENCE" Pennsylvania Colonial Currency Note. This is a rare denomination from a very scarce issue date, and is One of the Finest Known. PCGS has graded just (6) different examples to date, and only three of those (including this one) is problem-free. Furthermore, PMG has graded a total of only (4) different examples of a PA-266 in over 15 years of grading colonial notes, and only one of those is graded higher than this PCGS VF30 example. All notes from this later-date Pennsylvania issue are scarce, but the lower denominations like this 9d note are just simply rare. Very conservatively graded & certified by PCGS as VF30, and perhaps a bit undergraded. No problems of any kind, and just one tiny pin hole at lower left corner. Bold 4-digit serial number 6548 in reddish-brown ink, along with the equally bold signature of Peter Baynton. Superb eye-appeal with no problems of any kind, and very darkly inked on both sides. The thick ragpaper is watermarked "PENSYL VANIA" on two lines when viewed with a light source behind (see photo). "Pennsylvania" misspelled on purpose as an anti-counterfeiting device. Newman lists a price of $1,250 for an example in VF20 condition and $2,000 in XF40 on page 363 of his book "The Early Paper Money of America", 5th Edition. This note's value should be somewhere around the average of those two values, or about $1,625 (see photo). This is an authentic & historical item that was printed in 1785 and issued just after the conclusion of the Revolutionary War (1775-83) , only nine years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
