Description: Here's a really unique antique horse racing photo. This is a winner's circle and finish line shot of Edith W. winning the Beechmont Stakes on September 27, 1913 at Douglas Park in Kentucky. The filly was owned by John Madden, one of the most famous horsemen of the time, and trained by Frank Weir, who also owned and trained 1914 Kentucky Derby winner and Hall of Famer Old Rosebud, who had the same sire as this filly. This piece originally came from the estate of Frank Weir, and likely was very special to him as this horse was named after his wife, Edith. On the back of this is what appears to be the original inscription about the Beechmont Stakes, and then some writing was added by what I assume was a later owner of this piece. It mentions Old Rosebud and the sire Uncle, but also refers to Old Rosebud as a filly (he was a gelding). It also mentions H.C. Applegate as the owner, but Weir owned this horse at the time of the win - see the last photo for coverage of the race at the time (it's just a screenshot and the newspaper is not included). This piece is quite large at 15"x20" overall. The large photo is mounted on cardboard, which you can see is a bit rough on the corners and edges and has one tear along the right border. But the photo itself is unscatched and still looks great, and then there's a smaller race photo that has been pasted in the corner. The photos both have a matte type finish rather than a glossy finish like you'd see in modern photos. The photo itself is about 11"x14", which is quite large for that era. This would really look great in a nice frame. Please review the photos and use the magnify feature to review the condition. We guarantee satisfaction with the racing items we sell, so if you are not happy with it then it can be returned for a full refund, assuming it is returned in the same condition of course. Shipping is $19.95 because this will have to go in a fairly large box to protect it. Please see our other auctions for an extensive collection of historic horse racing programs, trophies and memorabilia featuring horses like Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Dr. Fager, Damascus, Dan Patch, Buckpasser, Kelso and other champions and Kentucky Derby winners. We will be selling off most of our collection over the next couple months.
